Summary: This traditional folk tale hails from the Dan people of Liberia. A very lazy spider refuses to help his neighbors clear the land for the village farm, plant seeds, or pull weeds. Later on, when the spider decides to pick some ripe produce to eat with his plain rice, the tomatoes, cucumbers, and pumpkins tell him what's what and turn him away.
This activity is a beguiling blend of science and art. Set out carrots that still have their tops and paint. Let the children use the tops like paint brushes to paint designs on construction paper.
